This place is absolutely filthy. If it wasn't for the lovely people who go I'd leave. It needs a massive deep clean!! Members are taken for granted. The steam room is disgusting, the sauna is permanently closed and you daren't walk in the changing room without flip flops. The studio floors are dirty. There is no regular cleaner. The managers...who change frequently.. are either incompetent or Sports Direct just don't care.
Unfortunately, as it says on the tin, this is a Sportsdirect business, not a club. So, as is evident from the other reviews, there is little intention to improve facilities or even treat "members" appropriately. When I was taken around there was no mention of a tiered membership structure, so I found I was paying for classes which I did not want. Given that I was not made aware of the basic membership rate, I felt it was unethical to be charged a fee to change my status - but was told the club has no discretion "Sports Direct policy". I rather suspect it is policy to not make potential members aware of the cheaper rate. The actual basic membership rate is relatively good value, but then the equipment is old, and the gym small. It does take a long time for equipment to be repaired when it goes wrong. The pool is small and the water rather murky because the club does little to stop people using it as a plunge pool from the steam room and the sauna (when it is working, which is not often recently). Some have mentioned the difficulty parking when there are classes, most of the time I find it OK (and it is free). Since I wrote my comment it appears that Sports Direct is not going to repair the Sauna, and have boarded up the door - even though they advertise the Guildford Club having a Sauna!
The place is FILTHY. Black mould growing on windows in the gym the place is never cleaned and I mean NEVER. Changing rooms and pool a no go area I shower at home. Have written to head office multiple times and have never had a response. I use it cos it is five mins from my front door. Hoping and praying it will get taken over and overhauled. Was a member when it was Dragons and then LA fitness and it was a great little club. Sports Direct have run it into the ground. And they don't care.
I use many Sports Directs around the country and this one is comparably smaller. There's room for improvement:- parking can be a pain when the classes are on and the weight machines are limited because of the space. However, this is my local gym and it suits me well. I'm basing my 3 stars on the fact the money I pay goes far and that I am able to use all the SDs around the country.
Facilities are small, sure. But its a local gym with very few members. Its rarely cramped with people and Im almost never having to wait for someone else to finish using the equipment I need. Also Im frequently the only person in some sections of the gym most days!Staff are friendly enough, but what I can say is the personal trainers are brilliant! They love their work and want to help everyone in there. Personal trainer sessions are expensive, however, Ive frequently been given free advice from many of them just as a token of thanks for being a member there.Finally, its a small community of people. After just a couple months I have met most of the regulars. Theyre incredibly friendly and understanding of the gym and its size. Never be afraid to just ask if you can use the machine someone else is using. Theyll always be happy to share.This is based on my experience using their free weights and main section. I dont use the pool/saunas and have never been to one of their classes.
